Edo State Collaborates with UN FAO for Forest Conservation
Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, announced a collaboration with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and three other states in Nigeria to address biodiversity and forest conservation.

The governor revealed that the project holds a value of $3 million. Obaseki emphasised the government's commitment to combat deforestation and forest degradation while promoting the preservation and development of the state's forest resources.

Acknowledging the growing interest from both local and international investors in the forestry sector, Obaseki expressed gratitude to development partners for their support. He highlighted the ongoing partnership with FAO, which approached Edo State to participate in a project focused on conserving biodiversity and ensuring the sustainable use of lowland forests. The collaborative initiative involves Edo State and three other states, aiming to safeguard natural resources worth over $3 million.

The governor stressed the importance of collaboration among stakeholders in protecting the environment, adopting sustainable practices, and preserving the ecosystem to prevent biodiversity loss.

He emphasised that if properly harnessed and conserved, the state's forest resources have the potential to boost the economy. Obaseki reflected on the historical significance of timber exports for the region, expressing the need to revive sustainable practices that once contributed to the state's prosperity.

Reiterating the government's dedication to forest conservation, Obaseki assured the intensification of efforts to protect the forests. Collaborating with security forces and other stakeholders, the governor emphasised the commitment to remove unauthorised individuals from the state's forest areas.

By actively engaging in biodiversity and forest conservation initiatives, Edo State aims to contribute to sustainable development and revive the economic potential of its forest resources. The partnership with UN FAO and other states signifies a step forward in promoting environmental preservation and embracing practices that will ensure a prosperous and sustainable future for the state.
