Fatal Water Tank Accident Claims Student's Life in Lagos
In a devastating incident, Jamal Nureni's aspirations of attending the University of Lagos were tragically cut short when a neighbouring water tank fell and crushed him while he was sleeping. The 20-year-old victim resided with his grandmother, Alhaja Yemisi Odejinmi, in the Ikotun-Egbe area of Lagos.

According to reports, Nureni was asleep last Saturday when the water-laden tank from the adjacent compound toppled and crashed through the roof of his room, causing a fatal blow to his head. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The grieving grandmother shared that she had planned to obtain a citizenship confirmation letter for her grandson, a necessary requirement for his admission process. She had intended to accompany him to the palace of a Lagos monarch that morning to secure the letter, but tragedy struck before they could carry out their plans.

Odejinmi expressed her frustration over the situation, highlighting a long-standing issue with her neighbours. She explained, "Whenever they pump water and their tank is full, it spills into my compound. I have talked to them several times, but they didn't change, and because we are all from the same town (Abeokuta), I decided to let go and always sweep the water."

The incident prompted a visit from the Divisional Police Officer of the Ikotun Police Station, accompanied by his team, as the incident was reported. Odejinmi also revealed that she had informed Nureni's father, who resides in Canada, about the tragic news.

SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, confirmed the incident on Twitter and urged individuals to ensure the stability of their water tanks. He cautioned, "Tank stand gave way... full water tank fell off... went through the roof of the nearby bungalow... killed a young man sleeping in his room... You may want to check your tank stand."

The heart-wrenching accident serves as a reminder of the importance of proper maintenance and safety precautions to prevent such tragic incidents. The community mourns the loss of a promising young student whose dreams were abruptly shattered, leaving his loved ones grappling with immense grief.
