Mato emphasised that the FRSC would begin enforcing the requirement for proof of ownership of vehicles to ensure that drivers are the legitimate owners of their vehicles. This measure was implemented due to the increasing incidents of car theft. The FRSC conceived the idea of registering proof of ownership during vehicle particulars renewal in response to this alarming trend.
The Sector Commander stressed the importance of proper vehicle registration once the National Vehicle Identification Scheme commences, stating, "This will enable us to recover stolen vehicles more effectively; one cannot register a stolen vehicle somewhere, as he or she will definitely be caught."
Mato also highlighted a decrease in the rate of road traffic crashes in the state, noting that approximately 300 individuals lost their lives in accidents from January to the present date. Although still a significant number, this figure represents a decline compared to previous years. He attributed these crashes to overspeeding and the neglect of road signs, urging drivers to exercise caution, especially in areas where road construction is ongoing.
The Sector Commander organised the sensitisation campaign, particularly targeting commercial drivers ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir festivity, with the aim of minimising the occurrence of road crashes. He expressed concern that commercial drivers tend to engage in overspeeding during festivities in order to meet their targets within limited timeframes.
Mato appealed to drivers to avoid overspeeding, overloading, wrongful overtaking and driving during heavy rain. He emphasised the importance of maintaining vehicles in good condition and installing speed-limiting devices. Additionally, he urged drivers to always wear seat belts, recognising their significant role in ensuring road safety.
Dauda Biu, the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, stressed that during festive periods, the corps intensifies sensitisation and enlightenment campaigns on safety measures while on the road. Biu, represented by Deputy Corps Commander Abdulrahman Bima, called upon drivers to practice responsible driving and ensure their vehicles are in optimal condition.
Mustapha Babayaro, the Station Manager of Kaduna Line at the Unguan Sarki Bus Terminal, lauded the timely nature of the sensitisation campaign as the Eid-el-Kabir festival approaches. He expressed concern over the common practice of drivers rushing to make more trips during the festive period in an attempt to meet their financial targets. Babayaro cautioned drivers against such behaviour and urged them to adhere to road safety rules and regulations.
