JUST IN: Abdulkarim Chukkol Takes Charge as EFCC's Acting Chairman
In the wake of Abdulrasheed Bawa's suspension as the executive chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) by President Bola Tinubu, Abdulkarim Chukkol has taken on the position of acting chairman of the commission.

Prior to this appointment, Chukkol served as the director of operations at the EFCC, showcasing his dedication and commitment to the agency's mission.

Chukkol's association with the EFCC dates back to his role as a pioneer staff member and his membership in the EFCC Cadet Course One. Renowned for his vast experience and expertise, Chukkol specialises in investigating cybercrime and money laundering, two critical areas in the fight against financial crimes.

Throughout his career, Chukkol has held several command appointments within the EFCC. From 2011 to 2016, he served as the Head of the Advance Fee Fraud and Cybercrime Sections of the Lagos and Abuja Zonal Commands, respectively. In 2017, he assumed the pioneering role of Commander of the Uyo Zonal Command, and in 2020, he took on the responsibility of Commander of the Port Harcourt Zonal Command. These appointments reflect his leadership skills and ability to effectively combat financial crimes on various fronts.

Chukkol's dedication to international cooperation is evident through his participation in numerous special operations alongside esteemed international law enforcement organisations.

He has cultivated strong relationships with agencies such as the FBI, UK National Crime Agency, United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), United States Secret Service, Australian Federal Police, Dutch Police, German Police, and South African Police. These collaborations highlight his commitment to leveraging global partnerships in combating transnational financial crimes.

Furthermore, Chukkol has actively engaged with other governments to enhance the legal framework and infrastructure required for successful law enforcement actions.

As Nigeria's representative at the International Mass Marketing Fraud Working Group, he assumes a crucial role in coordinating efforts among key government regulatory bodies, law enforcement agencies, prosecution teams, immigration and customs departments, financial intelligence units, consumer protection agencies, and trade and competition bureaus.

This broad spectrum of collaboration ensures effective responses to mass marketing-related issues, fostering global cooperation in combating fraud.

Chukkol's pursuit of knowledge and continuous professional development is evident through his participation in numerous courses, seminars, and workshops. Notably, he attended the prestigious Oxford University in the United Kingdom in 2022, where he further honed his expertise in public corruption, advance fee fraud, and other economic and financial crimes. His commitment to expanding his knowledge base underscores his dedication to staying at the forefront of evolving trends and tactics employed by criminals.

Over the course of his career, Chukkol's exceptional work and transformative initiatives have garnered him several accolades and commendations, both domestically and internationally. The EFCC recognised his outstanding contributions by awarding him "the Most Outstanding Award in Operations." Likewise, the United States Department of Justice honoured him with the "Outstanding Performance Award," highlighting his impactful efforts in the fight against financial crimes.

Academically, Chukkol holds a bachelor's degree in agricultural economics from the University of Maiduguri, which he obtained in 2000. Additionally, he holds a postgraduate certificate in criminal justice education from the University of Virginia in the United States, further augmenting his knowledge and skills.

He also possesses a graduate diploma in cybersecurity and spectrum management, demonstrating his commitment to staying abreast of technological advancements and their implications for financial crimes.
