The managing director of NIWA, George Moghalu, conveyed this message through a statement released by the authority's spokesperson, Jibrin Darda'u, in Lokoja on Wednesday.
"Given the circumstances, we will, in line with extant laws and regulations, investigate this callous incident and prosecute those found culpable," stated Mr Moghalu.
Expressing condolences to the families of the victims, as well as the government and people of the state, Mr Moghalu described the incident as "very unfortunate" and "worrisome."
Preliminary investigations conducted by NIWA's area manager in the Minna/Kwara Area Office have shed some light on the tragic event. It was revealed that the boat driver and wedding guests were on the ill-fated voyage around 2:30 a.m., which clearly indicates a blatant disregard for the laws governing Inland Waterways navigation.
"NIWA, as an authority, will not sit idly by and allow reckless boat operators to flout our safety guidelines and endanger the lives of innocent commuters," asserted Mr Moghalu.
The management of NIWA expressed deep sadness over the boat mishap that occurred on June 12 along the Jebba Lake channel in the Lafiagi-Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara. The incident is feared to have claimed the lives of approximately 103 passengers.
Mr Moghalu stated, "This accident is clearly an unfortunate and avoidable one." He went on to argue that the wooden boat, allegedly carrying more than 200 passengers without the use of life jackets and sailing during the night, clearly exhibited gross overloading and misconduct.
The tragic boat mishap has sent shockwaves through the entire nation, prompting a renewed call for strict adherence to safety regulations and the enforcement of punitive measures against violators.
