In addition to the arrests and drug seizures, the NDLEA command in Kwara State has also achieved notable progress in the legal proceedings related to drug offences. Adebimpe revealed that the command has secured 57 convictions, provided counselling to 99 inmates, and currently has 39 pending cases. However, she expressed concerns about the slow pace of the criminal justice system and the reluctance of some judicial officers to impose strict penalties on offenders, which poses a significant challenge to countering narcotics efforts in the country.
One worrisome aspect highlighted by Adebimpe is the involvement of students from institutions of higher learning in drug abuse. She emphasised that the NDLEA is actively engaged in intelligence-led operational activities aimed at reversing this trend. The agency is also implementing various advocacy and enlightenment measures to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and trafficking.
In light of these efforts, Adebimpe called on the Kwara State government and other stakeholders to extend their support to the agency. She emphasised the importance of collaboration in reducing drug abuse and trafficking to a minimum. Adebimpe's plea was echoed by Barakat Olanrewaju, the chairperson of the Kwara drug control committee. Olanrewaju emphasised the need for all stakeholders to work together in the fight against drug abuse. She also appealed to parents to take a keen interest in their children's activities, in order to prevent them from falling into the clutches of bad influences and engaging in drug-related activities.
The NDLEA's efforts in Kwara State signify a determined stance against drug trafficking and abuse. Through proactive measures, enforcement actions, and collaboration with relevant stakeholders, the agency aims to create a drug-free society that prioritises the well-being and safety of its citizens.
