Vigilante Camp Attack: Police Eliminate Gunmen in Anambra
The police in Anambra State have confirmed the killing of two gunmen who launched an attack on the camp of the Anambra Vigilante Service in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area on Monday. The Ihiala LGA, which shares a border with Imo State, has been a target of numerous terror attacks by gunmen in recent times.

According to a source, approximately 15 armed men stormed the vigilante camp in the early hours of Monday, initiating a firefight with the security agents. However, the assailants were successfully repelled.

During the intense exchange of fire, two of the gunmen were neutralised, and two AK-47 rifles were recovered from the scene. Many of the remaining attackers fled the area due to the overwhelming firepower of the security operatives, with several sustaining injuries and bullet wounds in the process. Fortunately, no casualties were reported among the vigilante personnel who were targeted.

Confirming the incident, the police spokesman in Anambra State, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, urged both private and public hospitals to promptly report any individual seeking treatment for bullet wounds. In response to the attack, a joint security team has been deployed to the area to apprehend the fleeing gunmen. DSP Ikenga emphasised that no lives were lost among the vigilance operatives during the confrontation.

Governor Charles Soludo, in a statement released by his press secretary, Christian Aburime, reassured the public of the government's unwavering commitment to the safety and security of Anambra State. He commended the security forces for their swift response and pledged that they would continue to safeguard the lives and properties of both residents and travellers in the state.

The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing security challenges faced by various communities in Anambra State. It underscores the need for concerted efforts by the government, security agencies, and local communities to collaborate and proactively address the root causes of insecurity in the region. The state government remains resolute in its determination to restore peace and create an environment where residents can go about their daily activities without fear.
