British envoy praises Nigerian culture, promotes digital empowerment
Departing British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, Ben Llewelyn-Jones, expressed his admiration for the energy, confidence, self-belief, and culture of Nigerians during a farewell reception organized by the British High Commission in Lagos. Llewelyn-Jones, who is leaving Nigeria after three years of service, praised the rich diversity, music, and culture of Nigerians, stating that these aspects should be emulated worldwide as they hold valuable lessons.

Reflecting on his time in Nigeria, Llewelyn-Jones highlighted the high energy exhibited by Nigerians and their unique approach to various aspects of life, including food, culture, and music. He expressed his fondness for Nigerian cuisine, particularly Jollof rice and chicken, and commended the country's diversity. Llewelyn-Jones emphasized that the energy of the Nigerian people is irreplaceable and something that cannot be easily replicated elsewhere.

During his tenure, the departing envoy shared that he had learned to speak pidgin English, although he admitted he was not fluent in it. He also noted the strengthened bilateral relations between the Nigerian and British governments, resulting from various partnerships and interventions from both sides.

Llewelyn-Jones highlighted the Commission's efforts to empower women in accessing digital skills and the digital economy. He mentioned connecting female and male tech entrepreneurs with investors to foster the growth of businesses and unlock the full potential of Nigeria's cutting-edge technology sector.

In addition to digital empowerment, the UK government, according to Llewelyn-Jones, supports victims of sexual violence through various programs. He encouraged victims to speak out and emphasized the importance of prevention and access to support services. Llewelyn-Jones revealed that funds were raised for centers dedicated to handling cases of sexual violence in Lagos.

As he bids farewell to Nigeria, Llewelyn-Jones expressed his admiration for the Nigerian people and their culture, highlighting the valuable lessons that can be learned from their high energy and diversity. The departing envoy's efforts to promote digital empowerment and support victims of sexual violence have left a positive impact on the bilateral relations between the United Kingdom and Nigeria.
