Dr Abbas Idriss, the Director-General of the Agency, issued a statement confirming the decision to place the emergency response team on high alert.
The weather forecast by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMET) predicts heavy to moderate rainfall in the FCT and its neighbouring states, raising concerns about possible flash floods, riverine flooding, strong winds, and soil erosion, as well as thunder and lightning.
The agency's preparedness aims to prevent damage to infrastructure, displacement of people due to floods, and the outbreak of water-borne diseases. To ensure an efficient emergency response, FEMA has mobilised its search and rescue team and updated its flood contingency plans.
Dr Idriss urged residents to heed early warnings and refrain from driving or wading through flooded areas during the rains. Additionally, he advised clearing blocked drains and urged people residing on water channels to relocate for their safety.
In case of any emergency, residents were advised to promptly dial the 112 emergency toll-free number to enable a timely and effective response from the agency.
As the risk of heavy rainfall looms, FEMA remains vigilant in its efforts to safeguard lives and property in the Federal Capital Territory and surrounding areas.
