Fire Breaks Out in Bayelsa State Medical University Hostel
There was panic at the Bayelsa State Medical University campus in Yenagoa as a fire broke out in one of its hostels early on Wednesday morning. The fire, which started around 6:40 am in the female hostel, was reportedly caused by an electric spark during an attempt to iron clothes by a student. The alarm raised about the fire outbreak caused students to scramble for safety, with some evacuating their valuables from the hostel.

Prompt response from both federal and state fire services personnel helped to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to other rooms in the block. While no lives were lost and no physical injuries were reported, the inferno resulted in the destruction of personal belongings belonging to the occupants of the affected room.

The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Ebitimitula Etebu, and the Chief Security Officer, Prince Diete-Spiff, expressed their gratitude to the officials of the two fire stations in the state for their swift response to the emergency. The university authorities are expected to assess the extent of the damage caused by the fire and provide necessary support to affected students.

Efforts to raise awareness about fire safety measures and the proper use of electrical appliances are expected to be intensified in the aftermath of the incident to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The safety and well-being of students remain a top priority for the university administration, and measures will be put in place to enhance fire prevention and response mechanisms on campus.
