According to Sa'ad, the deceased robber was a member of a notorious gang that had been terrorising the state. The encounter occurred in the early hours of Thursday along the Gombe-Degeze road when officers from the Bojude Division intercepted the gang's robbery operation. While other members of the gang managed to escape with stolen items, the police successfully neutralised one of the robbers.
Sa'ad shared details of the events leading up to the operation, stating, "Information was received from a trailer driver along the Gombe Bojude axis, reporting that suspected armed robbers had blocked the Gombe-Degeze road, robbing drivers and passengers. In response, police operatives on routine patrol from the Bojude Division swiftly rushed to the scene on a rescue mission."
Upon arrival, a fierce exchange of gunfire ensued between the armed robbers and the police, with the officers ultimately prevailing. While some suspects managed to flee the scene, the deceased robber was shot and killed. The police recovered an AK-47 rifle and a mobile phone as evidence from the deceased, and the body was transported to the morgue.
In addition to the successful operation, the Gombe State Police Command also paraded 17 other suspects involved in various criminal offences, including criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, inciting disturbances, cult-related activities, trespass, and shop-breaking. The spokesperson stated that the suspects had confessed to their crimes and that the cases would be brought before the court for prosecution.
During the parade, the police displayed the exhibits recovered from the suspects, which included a Dane gun, one knife, a torchlight, two cutlasses, two knives, and a sword.
The command's spokesperson emphasised their commitment to combating crime and ensuring the safety and security of all residents in Gombe State. The police will continue their relentless efforts to apprehend fleeing criminals and bring them to justice. The command urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities, as community cooperation plays a vital role in maintaining law and order.
