Medical Expert: Seizures Not Spiritual Attacks, Urges Proper Treatment
In a recent interview, Consultant Neuropsychiatrist Dr. Ifedilichukwu Uchendu emphasized that seizures should not be treated as spiritual attacks but rather as a medical condition that can be effectively managed. Dr. Uchendu explained that seizure disorders, also known as epilepsy, are neurological disorders characterized by recurrent and unprovoked movement. These seizures occur due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain, resulting in temporary changes in behavior, sensations, or consciousness.

Dr. Uchendu clarified that some seizures affect both sides of the brain, while others may be localized to a specific area but still cause significant damage. He distinguished between generalized seizures, which involve widespread electrical discharges throughout the brain and typically affect both sides simultaneously, and focal seizures, which originate in a specific area of the brain.

Addressing misconceptions, Dr. Uchendu stated, "It is not a spiritual attack caused by spirits or demonic forces. It is recommended to consult a medical professional for accurate diagnosis, management, and treatment." He emphasized the importance of seeking immediate medical intervention for individuals experiencing seizures, as the mental consequences of the condition can become severe if not promptly addressed.

The expert highlighted several potential consequences of seizures, including cognitive impairment, behavioral and emotional issues, learning disabilities (especially in children), and other neurological disorders. Unmonitored seizure episodes can also result in serious injuries or physical trauma such as falls, fractures, head blows, and burns.

Dr. Uchendu further explained, "Mental consequences such as prolonged or uncontrolled seizures can affect cognitive functions, including memory, attention, and information processing speed. Seizure disorders may be associated with behavioral and emotional problems such as depression, anxiety, aggression, impulsivity, and social difficulties. Children with seizure disorders are at a higher risk of learning disabilities and academic underachievement."

During the postictal state, which follows a seizure, individuals may experience confusion, fatigue, headache, muscle soreness, and difficulty speaking or understanding language. The duration and intensity of the postictal state can vary.

The medical expert issued a warning that seizures can potentially become life-threatening when they enter the Status Epilepticus stage. This stage is characterized by seizures occurring continuously or in succession without the recovery of consciousness, necessitating immediate medical intervention.

Dr. Uchendu concluded by emphasizing that not all individuals with seizure disorders will experience the same mental and neurological consequences. The impact can vary greatly depending on factors such as the individual's characteristics, the frequency and severity of seizures, and the effectiveness of treatment.

It is crucial to dispel misconceptions surrounding seizures and encourage individuals to seek appropriate medical attention to effectively manage this neurological condition. With timely diagnosis, proper treatment, and ongoing care, individuals living with seizure disorders can lead fulfilling lives and minimize potential complications.
