The CWC noted the severe economic situation faced by Nigerians, leading to widespread suffering and poverty, attributing it to the insensitive policies and actions of the present administration. In response, the NLC resolved to demand the federal government to meet their demands within the seven-day ultimatum.
"We will embark on a nationwide action beginning Wednesday, 2 August 2023, to compel the government to reverse its anti-poor and anti-workers policies. We have directed all affiliates and state councils to begin immediate mobilisation and closely work with associations, individuals, and other entities, including the ones already on the streets, to ensure that the government listens to the people," stated Mr Ajaero.
Among the demands presented by the NLC was the immediate reversal of the recent hike in petrol pump price, an increase in public school fees, the release of eight months of withheld salaries of university lecturers and workers, and an increase in Value Added Tax (VAT).
Furthermore, the NLC called for the immediate inauguration of the Presidential Steering Committee, as previously agreed during consequential dialogues. The union also emphasised the need to build a coalition of all Nigerians, where everyone can be both leaders and followers, to foster national unity and progress.
The NLC urged all civil society organisations and Nigerians nationwide to begin mobilisation to take action and save the nation. The call for immediate mobilisation was also directed to all NLC affiliates and state councils to work closely with various associations, individuals, and entities already advocating for change in the country.
With the ultimatum set, the ball is now in the Federal Government's court to respond to the demands and avert the threatened nationwide strike. The NLC's stance underscores the growing frustration among the Nigerian workforce over the current economic challenges and government policies perceived to be detrimental to the well-being of the masses.
