"We will use different models for different states based on the context so we meet our targets of ensuring zero malaria in Nigeria," Dr Uhomoibhi explained during the launch event in Abuja. With malaria prevalence currently standing at 22 per cent in the country, the government is determined to leverage data for tracking and preventing the disease, ultimately aiming to end malaria by 2025.
Dr Chinwe Ochu, the Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics at the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, highlighted the significance of malaria modelling fellowship in training experts to use data for targeted interventions in high-need areas. Nigeria, being one of the highest contributors to the global burden of malaria, is actively working towards bringing down the prevalence and transitioning to a pre-elimination phase. Dr Ochu emphasised the importance of global collaboration to achieve the eradication of malaria and acknowledged the efforts being made to make significant progress in Nigeria.
One of the fellows, Dr Ismail Raji, emphasised the role of the malaria modelling fellowship in reducing the burden of malaria through accurate data. The fellowship program offers a comprehensive curriculum that covers core modelling content, in-depth knowledge of malaria epidemiology and transmission dynamics, as well as adjunct modules that enhance participants' careers and equip them with sought-after modelling competence.
The malaria modelling program is a collaborative effort involving Corona Management Systems, the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP), the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), and the World Health Organisation (WHO). The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is providing the necessary funding for the program. With this comprehensive approach and the commitment of various stakeholders, Nigeria is making significant strides towards achieving its goal of zero malaria prevalence by 2025.
