Eze emphasised that Nigeria is among the fastest-growing populations in the world and stressed the importance of periodic censuses for effective planning of development programs. However, he expressed concern about the country's inability to conduct a population census in the last 17 years, which has created an information vacuum.
"The data from the last census in 2006 has been rendered less useful for planning purposes," Eze stated, highlighting the urgent need for updated and accurate population data. He mentioned that preparations for the 2023 national census have already begun, including the demarcation of the 774 local government areas in Nigeria.
Eze emphasised the necessity of using current census data to drive poverty alleviation programs, ensuring that vulnerable populations are included and no one is left behind. He underscored the importance of implementing these programs based on reliable data obtained from the upcoming 2023 census.
Regarding the inclusion of religion and ethnicity in the 2023 census, Eze clarified that the commission intentionally excluded these sensitive topics from the questionnaires. This decision was made to avoid unnecessary controversies and attention, preserving the integrity of the census data. The primary objective of the questionnaire is to generate data that will facilitate sustainable development planning.
Dan Nwachukwu, the deputy vice-chancellor of UNN Enugu Campus, commended the collaboration between NPC and IDS, describing it as timely and appropriate. He emphasised that without an accurate and reliable census, it becomes challenging for the country to execute its planned programs effectively. Nwachukwu pointed out that the lack of comprehensive data has hindered the successful implementation of government policies.
Chuks Nwude, the director of IDS UNN, highlighted the relevance of the lecture's topic, "Methodology and Processes of the Population and Housing Census." He expressed his belief that the collaboration between NPC and IDS would contribute to advancing knowledge and understanding of the forthcoming census.
The upcoming national census in 2023 is expected to provide crucial data for Nigeria's development planning and policy implementation. With accurate population figures, the government will be better equipped to address the needs of its citizens and ensure inclusive growth and development across the country.
