The visit of President Raisi highlighted the diplomatic competition between Russia and the West in Africa, particularly over Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which has had significant economic repercussions on the continent, leading to soaring food prices. Western powers, along with India and China, have also sought to strengthen trade ties with Africa.
Hundreds of people, including Zimbabwean and Iranian flags, gathered at Robert Mugabe International Airport in Harare to welcome Raisi. The visit saw the signing of 12 agreements between the two leaders, covering various areas such as energy and telecommunications. These agreements are expected to facilitate Zimbabwe's access to Iranian innovation and technology, including the establishment of a tractor factory to support agricultural mechanization.
Raisi's visit to Zimbabwe comes as Iran intensifies its diplomatic efforts to alleviate its isolation and mitigate the impact of crippling sanctions imposed since the United States' withdrawal from the nuclear deal in 2018. During his Africa tour, Raisi also held talks with Kenyan and Ugandan leaders, discussing potential avenues for cooperation and strengthening economic and trade ties.
Describing Africa as "the continent of capacities and potentials," Raisi highlighted the significance of stronger cooperation for the advancement of both parties. Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani emphasized that Raisi's continental tour marked a new turning point and had the potential to enhance economic and trade relations with African nations. He also noted the shared "common political views" between Iran and the three African countries visited.
Zimbabwe's ruling Zanu-PF party spokeswoman, Melody Muzenda, emphasized that the visit underscored the country's positive relations with other nations and demonstrated their commitment to fostering international ties.
