Calabar University Suspends Law Dean Over Sexual Misconduct
The University of Calabar's Management has taken action by suspending Prof. Cyril Ndifon, Dean of the Faculty of Law, for alleged violations of the institution's established rules and policies. The suspension, effective from Thursday, was communicated through a letter signed by the university's Registrar, Mr Gabriel Egbe.

This decision comes in the wake of a protest staged by law students at the university who accused Prof. Ndifon of "high-handedness and improper behaviour toward female students." The incident raises concerns about his conduct and interactions with students, particularly female ones.

Notably, this is not the first time Prof. Ndifon has faced such allegations. In 2015, he was accused of sexually assaulting a 20-year-old 400-level student, resulting in his suspension. The National Industrial Court validated the suspension in 2016, highlighting the gravity of the allegations against him.

The recent suspension stems from Prof. Ndifon's response to a query issued by the university's management. However, Vice Chancellor Prof. Florence Obi found his explanations unsatisfactory. As a result, Prof. Ndifon's suspension was extended, pending the investigation of the allegations against him by a specially appointed panel.

The official letter from the university to Prof. Ndifon stated, "The vice-chancellor has gone through your written representations and is not satisfied with your explanations. She has, therefore, directed that you should be relieved of your position as Dean, Faculty of Law and placed on suspension, while the matter is referred to a panel that will be set up to investigate these allegations."

The letter also instructed Prof. Ndifon to transfer all university assets and responsibilities under his care to the Sub-Dean of the faculty before leaving his position. Furthermore, he is required to refrain from accessing the university premises except when responding to invitations from the investigation panel.

This incident highlights the importance of upholding ethical standards and maintaining a safe and respectful environment within academic institutions. The university's swift action demonstrates a commitment to addressing allegations of misconduct and ensuring the well-being of its students.
