Edo 2024: Group Warns Against "Diaspora" Governor, Opposes Power Shift
A group known as People's Defender Advocate/Civil Society Practitioner has expressed its stance on the forthcoming 2024 governorship election in Edo state.

The group asserted that the people of Edo will resist the emergence of a "diaspora" candidate for the governorship position. They also called on political parties to abandon the idea of power shift or zoning in their primaries, as such moves would be detrimental to the state.

Speaking in Benin, Bishop Osadolor Anthony Ochei, the Convener of the group, addressed journalists about the approaching election and the need for careful consideration in choosing the right candidate. Bishop Ochei emphasized that the governorship candidate must be someone who has actively contributed to the development of Edo state over time, possessing the necessary educational qualifications, experience, and a track record of success in both the private and public sectors. Criminal records would be unacceptable for any potential candidate.

He stressed the importance of democracy and good governance for the progress of the state and its people. While acknowledging the current government in power, Bishop Ochei pointed out the significance of providing good governance throughout its remaining months.

The group expressed concern about the prevailing political climate in the state, with different senatorial districts vying for the sole governorship seat and engaging in divisive rhetoric. The ongoing agitations, often based on tribal and sectional lines, have the potential to create disunity and divisions among the people of Edo state.

As a result, the group deemed it necessary to voice its position in order to prevent further fragmentation and steer the state away from unnecessary crises. They called for a candidate who can unite the people and lead the state towards progress and development. With the 2024 governorship election drawing near, the focus remains on finding a competent and committed leader who can bring positive change to Edo state.
