Speaking at the sixth Southern Zonal Accountant's Conference of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) in Benin City, Governor Obaseki highlighted the accomplishments achieved through prudent resource management and transparent practices.
The governor noted that his administration's focus on transparency, accountability, and efficient resource management has propelled the state's budget performance to impressive heights.
Under his leadership, Edo State's budget performance has grown significantly, from N116 billion upon assuming office in 2016 to approximately N320 billion, representing an annual growth rate of 85 percent. This remarkable progress demonstrates the positive impact of responsible governance on financial outcomes.
Governor Obaseki emphasized the importance of professional bodies like ICAN in contributing to effective governance.
He stressed that good governance involves processes and institutions that yield results aligned with societal needs, all while efficiently utilizing available resources.
His administration's approach is aligned with this principle, focusing on reforms across various sectors to drive economic prosperity in the state.
The governor stated, "Edo is number one when it comes to technology adoption in public governance in Nigeria as we have E-governance software that helps us drive and run our civil service. Our goal is to build a large, sustainable economy driven by energy, agriculture, and technology and build the infrastructure that drives everything in the State."
Governor Obaseki also highlighted key accomplishments, including the modernization of financial instructions, reforms in public procurement, adoption of IPSA accounting basis, enactment of public financial management and fiscal responsibility laws, and substantial growth in internally generated revenue.
His administration's commitment to transparency and accountability was recognized when the World Bank endorsed Edo State's audited financial report for meeting IPSA requirements.
The governor's emphasis on leveraging technology for transparent governance and fighting corruption reflects Edo State's progress towards a more efficient and accountable public service.
