In a press conference held in Lagos, Mr Umeofia stated that the syndicate's aim is to undermine Erisco Foods, Nigeria's leading local tomato paste manufacturer, and promote imported tomato paste products.
According to Mr. Umeofia, this syndicate has a history of attempting to discredit his company, which has positioned itself as one of the top tomato paste manufacturers in Africa, with a significant presence in Angola and Liberia. Erisco Foods is recognised as the fourth-largest tomato paste producer globally.
The controversy stemmed from a Facebook post by a user named Chioma Egodi, who claimed to have reviewed Erisco Foods' product, "Nagiko Tomato Mix." Mr. Umeofia criticised the post, emphasising that it lacked credibility and was intended to tarnish Erisco Foods' reputation and flagship products.
Describing the situation as one of the challenges of doing business in Nigeria, Mr Umeofia vowed to continue promoting local tomato paste production to benefit the Nigerian economy. He expressed concern that such false allegations could negatively impact the company.
Mr. Umeofia noted that Erisco Foods has faced difficulties accessing credit facilities and foreign exchange support in Nigeria over the past few years. To sustain local production, the company has relied on investments from abroad, particularly in Angola and the United Arab Emirates.
In response to the controversy, Erisco Foods released a statement defending its corporate identity and the safety of its products. Mr. Umeofia accused Ms. Egodi of refusing to remove the post despite the lack of specific complaints about the product. He claimed that her refusal and her interaction with individuals criticising the product suggested a hidden agenda.
Erisco Foods has petitioned the Inspector General of Police to investigate the allegations made by Ms. Egodi and the potential motives behind her actions. Mr. Umeofia stated that he would not allow his decades of hard work to be destroyed by individuals seeking to undermine the company.
The CEO clarified that the product in question, "Nagiko Tomato Mix," is distinct from tomato paste and always contains sugar as an active ingredient. He emphasised that the product is certified by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
Mr. Umeofia concluded that his company would continue to support local economic growth through its manufacturing efforts, resisting efforts by syndicates to damage its reputation.
