The tribunal ruled in favor of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, sacking Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, and declaring the APC candidate as the winner of the March 18 election.
The three-man tribunal ordered the withdrawal of the certificate of return previously issued to Governor Yusuf by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). According to the tribunal's judgment transmitted via Zoom, the certificate will now be issued to Yusuf Gawuna of the APC.
Tensions had been building ahead of the tribunal's judgment, leading to the closure of schools and businesses in Kano city.
The state police command has stated that it will enforce the curfew strictly. In a statement, the command warned residents that violators of the curfew would be arrested and face legal consequences.
The APC had contested the election of Kabir Yusuf, alleging various irregularities and violations of the Electoral Act 2022. Gawuna, the APC candidate, was strongly supported by the immediate former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and the current APC National Chairman. In contrast, Kabir Yusuf had the backing of Ganduje's political rival, Rabiu Kwankwaso, a former governor of the state.
