Emem Omokaro, the director-general of the National Senior Citizens Centre (NSCC), emphasised this commitment while marking the 2023 International Day of Older Persons in Nigeria on October 1.
The theme for the 2023 International Day of Older Persons is 'Fulfilling the Promises of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights for Older Persons Across Generations.' Ms. Omokaro stated that this theme aligns with the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and underscores the need for accelerated implementation of NSCC's innovative transformation.
The NSCC aims to adopt a multi-sectoral approach and provide services designed to enhance the quality of life and well-being of senior citizens, particularly those living in rural areas. Ms Omokaro called upon governments at all levels and concerned stakeholders to reflect on the 75-year history of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and its promises for all citizens.
She urged governments to examine issues related to universality, inclusion, equity, solidarity, and reciprocity across generations and assess how well the normative framework of the international and national human rights system addresses these concerns.
In addition, Ms. Omokaro appealed to all stakeholders to support the nationwide Elder Justice Campaign initiated by the NSCC. This campaign aims to address discrimination and violence against older persons while promoting their health and social inclusion.
Furthermore, she called on state governments to promptly domesticate the National Senior Citizens Centre Act of 2017 by developing an action plan on ageing. This would provide a framework for integrating older persons and ensuring seamless synergy between the national, state, and local government levels.
As part of the commemoration of the International Day of Older Persons, the NSCC has organised a series of events to celebrate and recognise the contributions of senior citizens to society. The Nigerian government has designated October 5 as the national day for older persons in successive administrations.
