Kogi Police Investigate Political Clashes Ahead of Election
The Kogi State police command has launched an investigation into reported incidents of political clashes and violence in the state as the governorship election approaches.

The move comes in response to reports of an alleged attack on the SDP campaign train in Koton-Karfe, during which some individuals were reportedly injured due to political violence.

Commissioner of Police for Kogi, Onuoha Bethrand, expressed concern over the escalating violence and made it clear that the police would not tolerate any acts of lawlessness.

He issued a stern warning to all political parties and their supporters to adhere to the rules and refrain from inciting violence.

Mr. Bethrand condemned certain politicians who have resorted to violence and are contributing to the deteriorating security situation in the state through their reckless statements and activities.

He emphasised the need for political actors to conduct themselves peacefully and avoid actions that could disrupt the peace, unity, and tranquillity of Kogi State.

The police commissioner stressed that the upcoming governorship election requires a peaceful environment, and he called on all political actors to cooperate and maintain peace.

He warned potential troublemakers to change their ways and refrain from acts of intolerance, as the police are committed to dealing decisively with anyone who threatens the state's peace.

Mr Bethrand assured the public of the police command's unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property in Kogi State throughout the election process.

He noted that some of the political crises and violence have arisen due to the failure of certain political actors to participate in stakeholder parleys and interactions aimed at addressing security concerns and ensuring compliance with electoral laws.

The police commissioner also highlighted the refusal of the SDP candidate to honour police invitations for investigations and to inform the command about political rallies, which has hindered security efforts.

He called on the SDP candidate to cooperate with the police and contribute to a peaceful election process.

The police commissioner expressed sympathy for the victims of the recent political violence in Koton-Karfe and emphasised the importance of maintaining peace and order in the state.
