The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced its intention to conduct bye-elections and rerun elections across the country on Thursday, February 1, 2024. These elections are aimed at filling existing vacancies in both the state and federal legislatures.
This information was disclosed by the commission's chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, during a meeting with leaders of political parties in preparation for the upcoming elections.
Prof. Yakubu stated that following the conclusion of legal proceedings, the courts have directed the commission to conduct rerun elections in 34 federal and state constituencies. These consist of one Senate seat, 11 federal constituencies, and 22 state constituencies.
Furthermore, he revealed that the commission will also conduct bye-elections to fill vacancies that have arisen due to the resignation or death of members.
Prof. Yakubu assured that a definitive date for the election and a detailed timetable will be released following the conclusion of the meeting with party leaders.
