Dr Anthony Ojukwu, the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), has voiced his concern over the issue of hate speech, labelling it as a danger to national unity, peace, and security.
This viewpoint was shared in an advisory opinion focusing on the media's role in combating and reporting hate speech, which was issued in Abuja.
Dr Ojukwu called upon everyone to unite in the battle against hate speech in all areas of society, including politics, social interactions, and cultural exchanges.
He acknowledged the media's crucial role in upholding freedom of expression and emphasised the ongoing need to support them in their duties.
Dr Ojukwu appealed for a concerted effort from the media, backed by the government and other stakeholders, to address the issue of hate speech.
He pointed out that the root causes driving hate speech include corruption, poverty, inequality, and poor governance.
He stated, "Hate speech is a threat to the achievement of human rights, peace and sustainable development in Nigeria. There is a need for concerted efforts by the media and supported by government and other stakeholders to combat hate speech."
