In a significant development in Edo State politics, Dr Bishop Akhalamhe has been chosen as the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) candidate for the upcoming 2024 governorship election, scheduled for September 21.
Akhalamhe, who previously held the position of party chairman, was adopted by party members during the primary election that took place in Benin City. The event was overseen by officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that during his acceptance speech, Akhalamhe expressed his gratitude to the party members for their trust in him. He promised that if elected, Edo would undergo significant development.
In his words, “When a man is prepared for a mission, he is always excited when he has the support of the people. Today, I don’t just have the support of the people; I have the support of my party who has given me the mandate to fly its flag in the Sept. 21 election."
Akhalamhe pledged to work towards rescuing Edo from the grip of stagnation and economic decline. He vowed to ensure that the state experiences good governance when he assumes leadership from the current Governor, Godwin Obaseki.
