In a recent development, the House of Representatives has called on the Nigerian Law School to halt the proposed 60 percent increase in tuition fees for students. This resolution was arrived at on Wednesday, following a motion put forward by Obinna Ginger.
Ginger, who presented the motion on behalf of Kingsley Chinda, who was absent at the time, explained the circumstances surrounding the proposed fee increment. According to him, the Council of Legal Education had announced the fee hike for the 2024 session.
The lawmaker detailed that the tuition fee was set to rise from N296,000 to ₦476,000 for the 2023/2024 Bar Part II academic session. He expressed concern that this steep increase could result in a "high decrease in the number of Nigerian law school students".
In response to this pressing issue, the House has tasked the Committee on Tertiary Education and Services with finding solutions. The committee has been directed to report back with their findings within a two-week timeframe. This move underscores the House's commitment to addressing the concerns of students and ensuring affordable access to legal education in Nigeria.
