In a tragic turn of events, eight individuals lost their lives in a devastating auto crash along the Kastina-Ala-Zakibiam road in Ngibo village, Benue State. The accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when two vehicles, both carrying passengers, collided head-on.
Eyewitnesses at the scene recounted the harrowing incident, describing the moment when the two vehicles met in a violent impact. The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Benue State Command, Steve Ayodele, provided further details about the accident in a press briefing on Wednesday in Makurdi.
According to Ayodele, the accident was a result of excessive speed. He explained that one of the drivers had attempted to avoid a pothole on the road but ended up colliding with an oncoming vehicle.
Ayodele revealed, "It was a multiple accident involving two vehicles and it was fatal. 10 persons were involved – four female adults, five male adults and one female child. Out of the 10, eight people died."
He further detailed the casualties, stating, "The fatalities include four female adults and three male adults and one female child." In addition to the fatalities, two individuals sustained injuries in the crash and were promptly transported to Kastina-Ala General Hospital for medical attention.
This tragic incident underscores the dangers of speeding and the importance of maintaining safe driving practices, especially on roads with poor conditions such as potholes. It serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences that can result from a moment's lapse in judgement on the road.
