The Benue State Government has accused Emmanuel Udende, the senator representing Benue North, of misleading the Senate about the attacks in the state, particularly in Ukum Local Government area, where he originates from.
Paul Biam, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, responded to the motion of urgent national importance moved by Udende on Wednesday. Biam, who also hails from the same local government as the senator, stated that his findings, based on discussions with the caretaker chairman, Victor Iorzaa, and security agencies, contradict what the senator presented on the Senate floor.
Prime 9ja Online reported that Udende, while moving a motion of urgent national importance on the security situation in Benue State, alleged that the attacks were carried out by individuals posing as herdsmen. Udende criticised Governor Hyacinth Alia for his silence on the issue, stating that “despite public outcry, there is no visible action on the part of the government to curtail, abate or stop the criminal activities of the elements”.
Reacting to these allegations, Biam questioned why Udende would overlook the fact that the crisis in Ukum has been ongoing for a long time, with the local militia playing a significant role. Biam expressed concern over the senator's motive for such a deliberate omission and for absolving the militia of any wrongdoing.
Biam revealed that information from security agencies indicated that the local militia had collaborated with the herdsmen to carry out the attacks in Ukum. He said, “The governor has been tirelessly working, holding meetings with security agencies across the country in order to ensure that Benue is safe for all.”
He added that some arrests have already been made following the attack and investigations are still ongoing. Biam insisted that the government will not rest until the sponsors of these attacks are identified and brought to justice.
