Abba Yusuf, the Governor of Kano State, has requested the state House of Assembly's approval to establish four new ministries. The governor had earlier presented the names of four nominees for confirmation as commissioners on Tuesday.
Upon assuming office on 29 May, Mr Yusuf initially appointed 19 commissioners. In July, he added three more commissioners – Amina Sani, Ali Namadi, and Ibrahim Fagge. If the state lawmakers confirm the latest four commissioner-nominees, the number of commissioners in his cabinet will rise to 26. This is an increase from his predecessor, Abdullahi Ganduje, who had 21 commissioners.
According to Prime 9ja Online, Mr Yusuf is contemplating appointing Mustapha Kwankwaso, the son of his political godfather and former governor of the state, Rabiu Kwankwaso, as commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Eradication. The governor presented Mustapha Kwankwaso's name along with three others to the state’s House of Assembly on Tuesday for screening.
The governor has asked the lawmakers to approve the creation of an additional four ministries to enhance governance. Kamaluddeen Shawai, the assembly’s spokesperson, confirmed that the lawmakers received the governor’s request for the creation of additional ministries.
He said, “The Kano State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt Hon Jibrin Ismail Falgore has confirmed the request from the Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf for the creation of new ministries in the state." The proposed ministries are Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Eradication; Solid Minerals Resources, Power and Renewable Energy, Internal Security and Special Service.
The new ministries are expected to be overseen by the new commissioners nominated by the governor. Among them is a former commissioner for Land and Physical Planning, Adamu Aliyu, who was dismissed last September for issuing a death threat to judges of the state’s governorship electoral petition tribunal. The two other nominees are Usman Karaye and Abduljabbar Garko.
