In Kogi State, pensioners have made a plea to the state government, urging them to address the issue of unpaid gratuities in the local governments. They highlighted that none of them had received these payments.
The appeal was made by Engr. Clement Ohida, the Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) in Kogi State. His statement came in the wake of the Central Working Committee meeting of the union, which took place in Lokoja on Wednesday.
Ohida expressed gratitude towards the Governor of Kogi State, Ahmed Usman Ododo, for the increase in the percentage payment to pensioners in February. However, he also called for the harmonisation of pensions for those who retired several years ago.
The NUP Chairman emphasised that the full payment of pensions to pensioners in the state is feasible. This belief is based on the Federal Government's policy which mandates the clearance of all arrears.
He said, “While we are appreciating the state government for where we are, we believe that payment of 100 per cent pension is achievable."
"We call on the government to look into the aspect of payment of gratuity as this will help cushion the economic situation of our pensioners.”
Ohida pointed out that it is not standard practice for pensioners to receive a percentage of their pension. He explained, “We are coming from a situation where pensioners have had to live with 30-35% of their pension for whatever reason. But progressively we’re now on 85%, reason for the appreciation."
He acknowledged the dissatisfaction among many pensioners regarding the percentage pension. However, he also noted that if a solution cannot be reached through confrontation, diplomacy may be the only option.
“As a Union, we’re ready to bend backwards, reason why we’re appreciating the Government and also asking for more in the areas of 100% payment of pension, harmonisation and payment of gratuity."
Ohida further appealed to the State Government to harmonise pensions in the state. He highlighted the plight of pensioners who retired several years ago and are receiving meagre pensions.
“Some states have implemented what is called minimum pension making Pensioners take home something reasonable. In Kogi, we still have Pensioners who take as little as N5000. Now when that amount is paid based on percentage, you can imagine what it means for such a pensioner,” he said.
In conclusion, Ohida assured the current administration of the continued support and cooperation of pensioners in the state.
