A Gwagwalada Senior Magistrates' Court in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has sentenced 39-year-old security guard Thiouma Kwawi to four years in prison for viciously assaulting his wife with a cable wire and inflicting serious injuries.
Kwawi was convicted and sentenced on charges of criminal assault and causing grievous harm. He pleaded for leniency from the court.
Senior Magistrate Munir Sani handed Kwawi a two-year sentence for the first charge, with the option of a N200,000 fine. However, for the second charge, Sani imposed a harsher sentence of two years imprisonment without the possibility of a fine.
Furthermore, Magistrate Sani ordered Kwawi to compensate his wife, 19-year-old Kauna Jedi, with N200,000 to cover her medical expenses. He also mandated Kwawi's transfer to Suleja Correctional Centre, where he will be subjected to hard labour.
Earlier in the proceedings, the prosecution counsel, Dabo Yakubu, informed the court that Jedi, a resident of Mopol Barracks near Kuje Junction, Abuja, reported the assault to the Iddo Police Station on June 1st.
Yakubu presented evidence that Kwawi had used a stone and a cable wire to inflict severe injuries on his pregnant wife during the attack. The prosecution argued that Kwawi's actions constituted a violation of Sections 267 and 247 of the Penal Code. Section 247 specifies that anyone who intentionally causes grievous hurt, except in cases permitted under Section 245, faces imprisonment for up to seven years and a potential fine.
