UEFA has decided not to impose a ban on England players Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice following their controversial match against Slovakia at Euro 2024 on Sunday. Instead, the governing body has initiated disciplinary proceedings against the English Football Association for crowd disturbances and lighting of fireworks during the match.
According to a UEFA spokesperson, "Disciplinary proceedings have been opened against the English Football Association for lighting of fireworks and crowd disturbances during the ENG-SVK match." The Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) will review the case and make a decision in due course.
While Bellingham and Rice escaped punishment, the former was accused of making a lewd gesture towards the Slovakia bench, and the latter was involved in a heated exchange with Slovakia's coach, Francesco Calzona. However, UEFA deemed the incidents not severe enough to warrant individual sanctions.
