Prime 9ja Online reports that the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr Yakubu Maikyau (SAN), has clarified that the SAMOA Agreement does not require Nigeria to accept or recognise LGBTQ rights. Maikyau noted that the narrative being propagated is either due to ignorance or a deliberate intention to mislead the public.
In a statement, Maikyau urged the public to query newspaper and social media posts, emphasizing that the NBA remains committed to ensuring people-focused government actions. He clarified that the agreement is subject to local laws and the sovereignty of contracting nations, recognizing Nigeria's Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act and the supremacy of the Constitution.
Maikyau stressed that the NBA would have advised the Federal Government not to enter into the agreement if it compromised Nigeria's sovereignty. He emphasized that the negative narratives on the agreement are being pushed along sensitive lines of faith, culture, and morality, necessitating caution and proper education.
The NBA President called on the government to continue public enlightenment and urged stakeholders to join in countering negative perceptions. He reiterated that the agreement does not compromise existing legislations or undermine Nigeria's sovereignty.
The Samoa Agreement is a partnership agreement between the EU, its member states, and members of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States. The agreement focuses on six key priorities to tackle challenges in member countries over the next two decades. Nigeria signed the agreement on June 28, 2024.
Maikyau's clarification comes amid misconceptions and misinformation surrounding the agreement. The NBA's stance is crucial in ensuring that the public is well-informed and that the government's actions align with the nation's interests.
