Protesters of the EndBadGovernance movement in Lagos have vowed to take to the streets from Monday, marking a new phase in their ongoing demonstration, if their demands are not met by the government. This warning was issued by Mr. Hassan Soweto, a coordinator of the protest and member of the Youth Rights Campaign, while addressing the crowd at Gani Fawehinmi Park on Saturday.
Soweto declared that protesters would no longer be confined to the park in Ojota, but would instead march through the streets, defying a court order restricting protests in the state to the park. He emphasized that they would target Alausa, the seat of government, if their demands remain unaddressed. Soweto urged residents to attend their places of worship on Sunday to pray for peace, announcing that there would be no protest at the park that day.
The activist also called on the police to monitor the activities of suspected hoodlums attempting to disrupt the protest at the park. Observations by NAN revealed that the police had barricaded the service lane on Ikorodu Road for the protesters, while allowing motorists to use the BRT lane and two other lanes. Commercial activities have resumed in Ojota and its environs, with more shops opening for business.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adegoke Fayoade, was present, leading security agents in providing protection for the protesters for the third consecutive day. SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Command's spokesperson, confirmed that no protester was arrested on Friday.
