Nigeria's electricity generation capacity has suffered a drastic decline, plummeting to 3,521.37 megawatts on Saturday. This stark drop comes barely two weeks after the national grid achieved a year-high output of 5,105 megawatts on July 27.
According to the latest 24-hour national grid performance data, the 22 power plants connected to the grid collectively generated this reduced output. Notably, Egbin power plant emerged as the largest contributor, supplying 450 megawatts to the grid. Conversely, Sapele National Integrated Power Plant (Gas) and Geregu NIPP (Gas) failed to generate any electricity.
This development raises concerns about the country's power sector, particularly after the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, recently announced that electricity generation had reached a three-year high.
Despite substantial investments in the sector, Nigeria continues to grapple with electricity generation woes, struggling to exceed 5000MW for its vast population of over 200 million.
