The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has voiced consternation over the rapid deterioration of a section of the Kano-Maiduguri highway, recently rehabilitated at considerable expense. This unfortunate turn of events, occasioned by flooding, has underscored the transience of Nigeria's road infrastructure.
In a statement, Umahi's media aide, Orji Uchenna Orji, conveyed the Minister's dismay at the fleeting nature of the country's completed roads, which often succumb to the elements within a brief span. Umahi has despatched a technical team to conduct an on-site assessment, with a view to devising a durable solution.
The Minister has instructed the Director of Highway Rehabilitation to collaborate with the Permanent Secretary to deploy a team of experts, tasked with evaluating the damage and proposing remedial measures. Umahi has expressed frustration at the ephemeral nature of the country's roads, noting that a one-year liability period for contractors is woefully inadequate.
During a review meeting with key stakeholders, Umahi intimated plans to revisit the liability framework for federal projects, with a view to ensuring greater durability and value for money. He commended progress under the Tax Credit Scheme, while urging contractors to redouble their efforts, emphasizing the importance of meeting project milestones and adhering to strict timetables.
