The Zamfara State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a strong ultimatum to the state government, demanding the immediate implementation of the N70,000 national minimum wage. This decision aligns with the directive from the NLC National Secretariat following a meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on 8 November 2024.
In a communiqué signed by the NLC Zamfara State Chairman, Comrade Sani Halliru, and made available to journalists in Gusau, the council condemned the refusal of several state governments, including Zamfara, to enforce the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act. The NLC described this non-compliance as a disregard for workers' rights, especially given the increasing economic pressures on citizens.
The communiqué revealed that all affiliate unions in Zamfara have endorsed the ultimatum issued to the state government. The unions demand full implementation of the minimum wage by the end of November 2024, failing which industrial action will commence.
"Failure to implement the wage will compel the NLC and its affiliates to embark on an indefinite industrial action, effectively shutting down the state from December 1, 2024," the communiqué stated.
The Zamfara NLC emphasised its solidarity with workers nationwide, condemning the delay in implementing the minimum wage as "a blatant disregard for the law, morality, and the well-being of workers who continue to endure immense hardship."
It further called on workers in the state to prepare for the proposed industrial action, describing it as a necessary step to secure their rights and improve their standard of living.
"The NLC Zamfara State Council remains committed to advocating for the welfare of workers and ensuring that the government fulfils its obligations," the communiqué added.
Highlighting the plight of workers, the council reiterated its resolve to ensure compliance with the minimum wage law, stating: "Justice delayed is justice denied. Nigerian workers deserve their rightful wages, and we will not relent until the minimum wage is fully implemented in Zamfara State."
The demand for the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage comes amid widespread concerns over the rising cost of living, with workers increasingly vocal about their economic struggles. The Zamfara NLC's firm stance underscores the urgency of addressing workers' welfare across the state.
