Shehu Sani, a former Senator representing Kaduna Central, has criticised former US President Donald Trump’s mass deportation of undocumented immigrants, calling it hypocritical and morally unjust.
He pointed out that America’s white population historically comprised individuals who arrived without documentation, making the current crackdown ironic.
Sani expressed his views via his X handle, @ShehuSani, in reaction to Trump’s plan to deport and detain undocumented immigrants at Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba.
However, he noted that one potential benefit of the policy could be that it might push Africans and Latin Americans to prioritise developing their home countries instead of seeking opportunities abroad.
Regardless of how much immigrants cherish the United States, Sani stressed, they would ultimately be reminded that they do not truly belong.
Trump’s mass deportation is hypocritical and immoral for a people whose white population were historically ‘undocumented’ immigrants. But the positive side of it is, it sends a strong message to Africans and Latin Americans, stay back and reconstruct your country. No matter how much you love their country, they will one day remind you that you do not belong.
