Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has reinstated three senior public officials whose suspension had earlier been approved by his administration, following a reversal of the decision by the State House of Assembly.
Those affected are Maxwell Ogiri, the Executive Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Area; Grace Adagba, Chairperson of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB); and Michael Uper, Executive Secretary of the Benue State Lottery Commission.
The trio were suspended earlier in the year after the House of Assembly passed a resolution recommending their removal from office. Governor Alia subsequently acted on that resolution, endorsing their suspension.
However, the political climate within the Assembly shifted after a change in its leadership. The legislators revisited the matter and voted to overturn their previous decision, asking the governor to revoke the suspension order.
Responding to this development, Governor Alia, through a statement released on Monday by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, confirmed that the officials had been cleared to return to office.
The statement read: “In compliance with the resolutions of the House, His Excellency hereby directs the immediate reinstatement of the affected officials.”
The governor further underscored his recognition of the legislature’s constitutional mandate, assuring that his government would continue to maintain a cooperative working relationship with all branches of government.
According to the statement, “He reaffirms his respect for the constitutional roles of the legislature and reiterates his administration’s resolve to continue working harmoniously with all arms of government in the collective pursuit of peace, progress, and good governance in Benue State.”
Governor Alia also urged the reinstated officials to recommit themselves to their responsibilities, stressing that public office requires accountability and service to the people.
“He charges the reinstated officers to rededicate themselves to their duties, uphold the highest standards of accountability, and work diligently in the interest of the people,” the statement continued.
The governor closed his remarks with an expression of gratitude to the people of Benue for their patience and support, while restating his pledge to deliver a responsive and transparent administration.
“He appreciates the understanding and support of the people of Benue State and assures them of his continued commitment to building a transparent, responsive, and people-centered administration.”
