The Senate on Wednesday confirmed Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Amupitan’s confirmation followed a three-hour screening session conducted by the Committee of the Whole, during which lawmakers questioned him on electoral reforms, institutional independence, and plans for strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process.
After the screening, the Senate reverted to plenary, where Senate President Godswill Akpabio put the motion for confirmation to a voice vote. The nomination was unanimously approved without any objections.
President Bola Tinubu had earlier forwarded Amupitan’s nomination to the Senate for confirmation, following its endorsement by the Council of State last week.
Amupitan succeeds Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure as INEC chairman ended recently.
Further details are expected to be released later.
