A truck struck a commercial bus on Alaro City Bridge in Epe, Lagos State, killing the bus driver and three other people, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has said.
The authority reported that 13 passengers suffered critical injuries. It separately disclosed that the truck driver lost both legs in the collision.
LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, outlined the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday, 28 October. According to The Sun’s report of the statement, the collision occurred on the bridge along the route towards T-Junction.
The authority’s preliminary account said the truck hit the fully loaded bus while crossing the single-lane bridge. The impact trapped several victims inside the damaged vehicles, prompting a rescue operation involving traffic officers, ambulance personnel and police.
LASTMA officers worked with personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to recover the bodies of the four people who died and convey them to a mortuary.
The Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) took the 13 injured passengers to the nearest medical facility for emergency treatment, according to the authority.
Officers from the Epe Police Division secured the scene while responders carried out rescue and evacuation duties. LASTMA said the police presence supported the emergency teams throughout the operation.
The collision also disrupted traffic along the corridor. LASTMA deployed officers to direct vehicles, manage the resulting queues and ease congestion around the affected section of the road.
In its account, the authority said personnel continued regulating movement as they worked to restore normal traffic flow. It did not specify when the route would return to normal.
The statement did not identify the victims or name the medical facility treating the injured passengers. It also gave no further information about the truck driver’s treatment.
LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki offered condolences to the families of those who died and wished the injured a full recovery.
He urged motorists to obey traffic regulations and take particular care on bridges, narrow roads and other sections with limited space for vehicles to manoeuvre.
The authority’s safety appeal called on drivers to leave adequate space between vehicles, observe speed limits and avoid dangerous manoeuvres. It emphasised caution when approaching restricted sections of the road, where motorists have less room to respond to hazards.
