Since Pele passed away on Thursday, many people have paid tribute to him, including Barack Obama, Sylvester Stallone, and the new president of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
The three-time World Cup champion, who is regarded as the greatest player in soccer history, passed away in Sao Paulo's Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital from multiple organ failure, according to the official cause of death.
When his body stopped responding to treatment, the renowned Brazilian player Pele, who was battling colon cancer, was put to hospice care in December.
Numerous well-known players, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Ronaldo Nazario, and Lionel Messi, paid tribute to the 82-year-old, while other public figures and international leaders also expressed their feelings.
"Pele was one of the best players to ever play the beautiful game," former president Obama wrote on Twitter.
“And as one of the most recognisable athletes in the world, he understood the power of sports to bring people together. Our thoughts are with his family and everyone who loved and admired him.”
On social media, Brazil’s incoming president Lula said, “I had the privilege that younger Brazilians didn’t have: I saw Pele play live at Pacaembu and Morumbi.
“Play? No. I saw Pele give a show. Because when he got the ball he always did something special, which often ended up in a goal.”
The United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) also paid respects.
NASA wrote, “We mark the passing of the legendary Pele, known to many as the king of the ‘beautiful game. This image of a spiral galaxy in the constellation Sculptor shows the colours of Brazil.”
Pele was a crucial cog in Brazil’s World Cup victories in 1958, 1962, and 1970; no player has ever won the trophy more often.
The legendary centre also left his mark on the big screen, starring in the 1981 movie “Escape to Victory.”
In the film about Allied POWs in a German prison during World War II, his character, Corporal Luis Fernandez, plays a football match against the germans.
Hollywood actor Sylvester Stallone, who co-starred with Pele in the film, wrote on Instagram, “PELE THE GREAT! Rest in peace! This was a good man.”
Bobby Moore, the 1966 World Cup champion for England, appeared with the legendary Ossie Ardiles of Argentina, who tweeted: “The King of Kings has died. Extraordinary player. Unique.
“Three times World Cup winner, more than a thousand goals. My idol when young. He made football a beautiful game and truly international.
“My time playing alongside him in Escape to Victory was a dream come true. RIP Pele.”
