This declaration was made by Wike during the start of construction on the Ogbo-Ihugbogbo Road in the Ahoada East Local Government Area.
The governor's remarks were in reaction to those of the governors of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, and Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal.
As the governor put it, “We can never play God because we know the role that God has played in our lives.”
“Don’t be treacherous because you want power… God will never give power to the wicked,” Wike continued.
At a rally in Delta on Friday, Okowa, the vice presidential nominee of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Atiku Abubakar’s running mate for the 2023 election, declared that God will give power to the party at the polls in the following year and that neither the G5 nor the party’s opponents can stop it.
Responding to Okowa, Wike stated the G5 is so successful because it has divine support.
To paraphrase what he stated: “Some people said only God will decide who will be president, not G5…”
The governor declared on Saturday, “We are where we are because of God, nobody can even breathe air, if not God, let alone hold position.”
“So, nobody can tell us that it is only God; we know that only God gives power, but our prayer is to our God: don’t allow those who will sell off Nigeria in one second to be in power. Our prayer is: God, don’t allow anybody that You’ll have an agreement with and the next two minutes the person will change.
“Our prayer is: God, don’t allow those who will betray their brother when they have agreed with their brother to do something. God, may You never allow such persons and that is why God is still making G5 to be stronger.”
Wike claimed that people in Atiku’s camp always hoped for a schism inside the G5, but it never materialised.
The governor added that he is enraged by what Tambuwal has said. “Somebody said they will handle us when we decide. These are the things that annoy us,” he said.
On Friday, Tambuwal, also the Director General of the Atiku/Okowa presidential campaign organisation, said the PDP would take on the G5 after the latter made clear who they would support for president in January.
Wike is at the head of a group of five disgruntled governors from the opposition PDP, known as the G5 or the Integrity Group. Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo, Samuel Ortom of Benue, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu, and Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia make up the rest of the group.
The Rivers State governor and the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, were both reported to have met in London on Thursday to discuss a possible arrangement, but both men have refuted the reports.
To back Atiku’s decade-long aspiration, the G5 has demanded the resignation of PDP National Chairman Iyorchia Ayu in favour of a southern replacement following the party’s presidential primary in May.
