Five killed in fatal Bayelsa road accident
Tragedy struck on Friday evening as five persons lost their lives in a fatal motor accident along the Amassoma-Tombia road in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. According to reports, a Mazda car carrying seven passengers, including some students at the Niger Delta University (NDU), collided head-on with a black Toyota SUV heading for Amassoma. The accident claimed the lives of four passengers and the driver of the Mazda car, while one was rescued alive and taken to the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital in Okolobiri.

The cause of the accident is still unknown as at the time of filing this report, but the police authorities in Bayelsa State have commenced an investigation to determine the cause of the fatal crash. The corpses of the victims have been deposited at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital for autopsy.

The police spokesman in the state, SP Asinim Butswat, confirmed the road crash and assured that efforts are being made to arrest the driver of the SUV car. He also noted that the investigation is ongoing to ascertain the cause of the fatal car crash.

The incident has thrown the families of the deceased into mourning as they come to terms with the loss of their loved ones. The Niger Delta University community is also in shock as some of the victims were students of the institution.

The Bayelsa State government has expressed its condolences to the families of the victims while urging road users to always exercise caution while driving. The state government also reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of road users in the state, through measures such as road rehabilitation and construction, as well as the enforcement of traffic regulations.

This incident is a reminder of the need for drivers to always exercise caution and adhere to traffic rules while on the road, to prevent the loss of lives and property. It also underscores the importance of regular maintenance of vehicles and the need for road infrastructure development to enhance safety on Nigerian roads.
