Chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo North (Afemai) have thrown their weight behind Governor Godwin Obaseki amidst the ongoing conflict between him and his Deputy, Philip Shaibu.
The crisis escalated after Shaibu sought a court injunction to prevent Obaseki, the state Chief Judge, and the Edo House of Assembly from initiating his impeachment.
In a press conference held in Benin, the group's Spokesman, Alhaji Kabiru Adjoto, conveyed their support for Governor Obaseki and encouraged him to remain focused and successfully complete his tenure.
Adjoto also expressed the group's disapproval of Shaibu's actions, emphasising that it was an ill-conceived move that caused embarrassment.
The group clarified the constitutional role of a Deputy Governor, referencing Section 193 (1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which outlines the duties of the Deputy Governor and the discretionary powers of the Governor.
They commended Governor Obaseki for entrusting Shaibu with significant responsibilities, labelling him "the busiest deputy governor in Nigeria."
Furthermore, Adjoto highlighted the principles of equity, fairness, and justice that the Edo-North people stand for. He acknowledged the privilege of their Senatorial District producing the governor from 2008 to 2016 and emphasised their commitment to not abuse that privilege.
Former Chief of Staff to Shaibu, Mr Jimoh Ijegbai, addressed the impeachment rumours, stating that they were mere speculations without any official notice.
He mentioned the upcoming court date on the 10th and indicated that INEC had not yet released a timetable for the governorship election.
Ijegbai criticised claims of Obaseki restricting potential candidates, stressing that the current tenure still had over a year remaining.
Additionally, Mr Yusuf Busari, the former Etsako-West Local Government Chairman, assured Governor Obaseki of the people's unwavering support.
He urged the governor to remain focused on his developmental efforts for the state and not allow the ongoing crisis to hinder his progress. The support from the Edo North PDP chieftains underscores the unity and commitment within the party despite internal challenges.
