Mason Greenwood Departs Manchester United Amid Mutual Agreement
Manchester United and forward Mason Greenwood have reached a mutual agreement for his departure from the club following a period of suspension.

The 21-year-old has been suspended since January 2022 amid allegations relating to a young woman and online media posts. Although facing charges including attempted rape and assault, the case was discontinued by the Crown Prosecution Service six and a half months ago.

Despite the discontinuation of charges, Greenwood remained suspended, and Manchester United has now confirmed his departure from Old Trafford.

In a club statement, Manchester United stated, "Based on the evidence available to us, we have concluded that the material posted online did not provide a full picture and that Mason did not commit the offences in respect of which he was originally charged.

That said, as Mason publicly acknowledges today, he has made mistakes which he is taking responsibility for." The club, along with Greenwood's family, is working to find the right environment for him to continue his career.

Greenwood scored 35 goals in 129 matches for Manchester United, but his contract is set to be concluded early, following the decision for him to recommence his career away from the club.

The forward expressed his understanding that he will be judged based on social media content, but he also highlighted that he did not commit the acts he was accused of and was cleared of all charges in February.

He accepted his mistakes within the relationship and expressed his commitment to being a better footballer, father, and person.

The internal investigation was concluded last week, with the club facing increased pressure and scrutiny.

The club's chief executive, Richard Arnold, noted that although the evidence they could access led them to conclude that Greenwood did not commit the alleged acts, they also recognised that the player had made mistakes for which he is taking responsibility.

Arnold emphasised the desire to minimise the investigation's impact on the team and players, as well as the sensitivity of the situation.

Manchester United's decision marks a collaborative effort to move forward and provide support to both the alleged victim and Mason Greenwood.

The club acknowledges that the matter is not entirely resolved and is committed to offering ongoing support to help both parties rebuild and move forward positively with their lives.
